About the Canton Little Learners Program....
The CUSD #66 Little Learners’ Program will establish a strong early intervention program. The program will significantly improve students’ academic, social, and emotional growth and provide students with the kindergarten readiness skills. The Illinois Early Learning Standards and the CUSD #66 Kindergarten Readiness Skills will be the guide for the curricular and instructional programs.
Children will be identified for the program through a comprehensive screening process. The child-find process will include: distribution and posting of print fliers and notices throughout the district and community; announcements through community service and retail agencies; and on-site visits at community businesses, agencies, and local low-income housing.
Families will be provided two opportunities for their children to be screened. The screening process will be conducted collaboratively with other district programs and community agencies. Children will be screened using the following: written permission of parent/guardian; parent interview containing family history and child’s health history; vision and hearing screening; speech and language screening; the DIAL-R Screening Instrument.
The program outcomes provide student activities that will focus on: a language-rich environment; non-verbal skills related to mathematics; the science and social science exploratory skills that encourage observation and questioning; technological tools and resources; a physical development curriculum that focuses on both fine and gross motor skills; physical, social, and emotional developmental; and exposure to the fine arts through art, dance, and music.
The defined outcomes will provide direction for the program goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes. The Creative Curriculum for Preschool is driven by the Illinois Early Learning Standards and is a developmentally appropriate program. The differentiated activities address individual needs and allow for student growth both physically and cognitively. Both the Illinois Early Learning Standards and the Kindergarten Readiness Skills provide the developmentally appropriate guidance for providing early learners with the skills and knowledge needed for the transition from preschool to kindergarten.
In addition, the program will also establish the following goals: provide program staff with high-quality professional development opportunities designed to increase knowledge and skills as they relate to the early childhood learner and program; provide a parental involvement program through parent training and participation in school-based family activities.
The evaluation of the Little Learners’ Program centers on the Illinois Work Sampling System. It is the tool used for reviewing and analyzing individual student progress and the curricular and instructional program. Included in the evaluation process will be needs assessments and surveys of staff members and parents/guardians.
