Accelerated Placement Program
The District provides an Accelerated Placement Program (APP). The APP advances the District’s goal of providing educational programs with opportunities for each student to develop to his or her maximum potential. The APP provides an educational opportunity with curriculum options usually reserved for students who are older or in higher grades than the student participating in the APP. APP options include but may not be limited to: (a) accelerating a student in a single subject; (b) other grade-level acceleration; and (c) early entrance to kindergarten. Participation in the APP is open to all students who demonstrate high ability and who may benefit from accelerated placement.
Early Entrance to Kindergarten:
Early Entrance to Kindergarten is the admission of a student to kindergarten who will not yet be five years old by Sept. 1st of that school year and whose 5th birthday falls between Sept. 2 and Oct. 31st, as documented by a certified copy of the birth certificate.
The process is as follows:
1. The student must go through the district’s preschool screening process, which typically occurs in January and May/June of each year.
2. A student can be considered for early entrance to Kindergarten who score at or above the 95th percentile in all areas of the screening instrument (Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning, 4th Edition DIAL 4).
2. Complete the Early Entrance to Kindergarten application. Click HERE for application.
3. Return the completed application to:
Canton Union School District #66
Attn: Jason Parsons
20 W. Walnut St.
Canton, IL 61520
4. Once the application has been received and all information/data has been verified, the student will be referred to our team for additional academic and social emotional screening.
6. The process will take approximately four weeks.
Applications will be accepted until June 10th of each year.
Whole Grade/Individual Subject Acceleration:
Whole Grade Acceleration is the practice of assigning a student to a higher grade level than is typical, given the student’s age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities.
Individual Subject Acceleration is the practice of assigning a student to specific content at a higher instructional level than is typical given the student’s grade for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in one or more subject areas.
Referral Process:
Single Subject Acceleration or Grade Acceleration Placement
Canton School District #66 accepts referrals for single subject acceleration or grade acceleration from parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators.
All students in grades K-8 participate in the initial screening process via the district benchmark assessments every school year.
Initial Qualifications for Referral:
Single Subject Acceleration: Students can be considered for acceleration in either reading or math. Students who score at or above the 95th percentile on all prior and current district benchmark assessments, may be considered for subject acceleration.
Grade Acceleration: Students can be considered for grade acceleration. Students who score at or above the 95th percentile in both reading and math, on all prior and current district benchmark assessments, may be considered for grade acceleration.
Identification Process:
Step 1: Referral- if the above District Benchmark criteria have been met.
Information is collected on students from a variety of sources, which will include but not limited to the following:
Step 4: Parent/Guardian meeting to share results.
If the body of evidence does not suggest academic acceleration, a parent/guardian meeting is held to discuss findings.
If the body of evidence suggests single subject or grade level acceleration is the best programming option for the student’s learning, a parent/guardian meeting is held to share results and to create an academic acceleration plan. The parents/guardians have the right to decline accelerated placement at any time.
Step 5: Develop the academic acceleration or grade acceleration plan
To be considered for accelerated placement for the next school year, applications must be submitted to the building principal by April 15.
